The Refugee Hub was founded at the University of Ottawa in 2012. Our mission is to foster justice and human rights for refugees at local, national, and international levels through innovative research, programs and partnerships. We are supported in our work by a team of in-house experts, a wide range of consultants, and a broad and diverse community of partners and stakeholders.
Our growing Knowledge Hub advances cutting-edge research on a range of refugee protection and migration topics and supports the strengthening of the evidence base underlying our policy and programmatic work on refugee resettlement, complementary pathways, and community sponsorship.
The Refugee Hub is also a partner in the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative (GRSI), a unique and ambitious multi-stakeholder collaboration that encourages and supports the creation of new community sponsorship programs around the world with the aim of increasing and improving overall refugee resettlement, strengthening local host communities, and improving the narrative surrounding newcomers. Our other partners in the GRSI include the Government of Canada, the UNHCR, the Open Society Foundations, the Giustra Foundation, and the Shapiro Foundation.
We are seeking a program officer to join the Refugee Hub’s small but powerful team to help support our organization’s policy and knowledge generation work. The program officer will contribute to advancing the Refugee Hub’s global strategy on resettlement and complementary pathways, supporting stakeholder communications and relations, organizing and supporting the execution of meetings, events, and speaking engagements, and supporting the delivery of special thematic and country-oriented projects. They will be a highly organized, self-motivated person who is a skilled project manager and writer and excels at problem-solving and multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment, and also demonstrates a high degree of professionalism, discretion, tact and responsibility, including when managing various files with little supervision.
- Program support: Coordinate and manage task management systems, including calendars, call lists, speaking requests, and requests from organizational partners and other Refugee Hub staff members.
- Meeting and event organization: Working with colleagues to prepare meeting agendas, organize meetings, and take and distributing minutes. Communicating with meeting and event participants in a professional and responsive manner.
- Partnership support: Maintain frequent communications with key Refugee Hub partners, including in government, the private sector, and other NGOs, to advance common agendas, including around meeting planning and any collaborative work. The candidate must be able to manage high level stakeholders in a highly professional manner while exercising discretion and good judgment.
- Project management: Work with team members to advance special projects around community sponsorship, resettlement, and complementary pathways, including the development of resources, materials, and tools to share knowledge and advance programmatic goals.
- Knowledge management: Read, analyze, brief on, and organize core reports and studies written by, as well as data collected by, external stakeholders relating to the Refugee Hub’s areas of focus.
- Briefing: Senior Refugee Hub staff on key topics to support participation in or presentations at global and strategic policy convenings.
- Executive support: Provide assistance to the Managing Director of the Refugee Hub in administrative matters when additional capacity is needed, including scheduling, organizing meetings, supporting travel arrangements, and compiling briefing packages. Provide executive-level communications support including drafting and editing of confidential correspondence and emails.
- Bachelor or higher degree in a relevant field (g. law, public policy, public affairs, political science, international development)
- At least 1-2 years of relevant work experience, with demonstrated emphasis on superior writing and analytical abilities
- Experience maintaining relationships with a variety of global stakeholders, such as key decision makers, donors and/or civil society organizations
- Experience organizing meetings, workshops, and other events
- Experience managing complex schedules and travel arrangements
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational and coordination skills, including data and information management
- High proficiency with the full suite of MS Office software, as well as remote-connectivity applications
- Superior time management skills with an ability to prioritize a wide range of tasks and projects
- Knowledge of refugee issues, global refugee politics, intergovernmental or public affairs, community sponsorship, innovative finance, or other related areas
- Experience in development and grant-making
- Familiarity with working across different languages, countries and cultures in a remote office environment
This is a remote work position with a preference for candidates in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, New York, or Washington, D.C.. A possibility to work remotely within the range of Eastern Standard Time to Central European Standard Time can be negotiated for the right candidate.
